About Peer Groups
section header bar

Peer Groups, a unique benefit of TTN, bring together a group of members to address issues of mutual interest. They are one of many ways TTN members can, in an informal, interactive setting, support and encourage each other as they address their active search for a rewarding life during a time of change. Overall, peer groups help TTN members forge new bonds of connection and friendship through shared ideas, insights and interests, and explore new opportunities.   More on Peer Groups

Bethene LeMahieu, of the Salon, prospecting for sources.

The Salon . . . Seriously

by Debbie Harkins

“Conversation isn’t always clean and neat,” says Bethene LeMahieu, founder and leader of the peer group Salon. “We’re all very protective of our time; we want to spend it in conversation that’s rich, challenging, surprising, and sometimes kind of messy.”

Salon’s monthly meetings can get “pretty lively,” grants member Ronnie Kelleher, “but they’re collegial, because Bethene is so calm, so unruffled, so focused; she centers us. What’s so special about these meetings is that we talk about things we usually don’t talk about, even with our friends. We’re sharing ideas that open our minds to a world beyond our everyday existence.”

“The Death of Macho,” “Human Rights in an Age of Terrorism,” “The Power of Witness”—topics that trigger deep and complex discussions—are the kinds of issues that Salon’s members relish. What’s vital, Bethene says, is that the subjects be intellectually demanding and that they reflect members’ life experience. (It’s a diverse group—members from their fifties to their eighties; single, married, widowed, divorced.) It was women, she notes, who led the famed literary and philosophical salons held in drawing rooms in earlier centuries. At those sessions, the conversation was to be clever and exhilarating—and scintillating. That, too, is what Bethene had in mind when she founded her group and named it “the Salon.”

A school administrator and history teacher, Bethene was impelled to begin the Salon because she felt that our sound-bite public debates trivialize matters that require thoughtful examination “I was committed to the notion of creating a space where we could explore issues seriously,” she says. Accordingly, every month, before the upcoming session, she emails members articles, quotations, and questions, so “members have a couple of weeks to be on the lookout for relevant things that appear in newspapers, in the news, in their conversions. I expect them be prepared; that’s crucial.”

Four years after its founding, “I’m fascinated with the way the Salon continues to develop,” Bethene says. “It’s a ‘miracle grow’ for ideas. I can’t remember a conversation we’ve had that hasn’t been productive.”

Unfortunately for the rest of us, there's an “extensive” waiting list to join the Salon. But someone among TTN's 600 NYC chapter members may be moved to start another group designed to elicit, as Bethene puts it, "meaningful and exhilarating conversation about topics of significance." After all, TTNers are leading more than 50 interest groups (ranging from improv to literary discussion to politics to poker). That other 'Bethene' will find tips on how to start a peer group on the NYC chapter's website and, at greater length, in the chapter's September 2009 newsletter.

Changing The World - Lets!

This group is about mapping possible actions to deal with untold violence, deaths, lack of health care that is the plight of women in many underdeveloped countries. It will use material from Half The Sky, a book by New York Times writers Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, to look at what is needed and how we can begin to change the world of these women and our own. It is about making a difference where a difference desperately needs to be made. The group is now scheduled to meet on Tuesdays from 1-3 PM once a month. Contact Ellen Gorman at 212-691-8583 or ellgore@verizon.net or Elizabeth Hansen at 646-684-3484 or egrhansen@gmail.com

Oceans Apart

When your children and possibly your grandchildren go thousands of miles away to live overseas, that is the ultimate "empty nest."  For those of us in that situation, this can present a formidable challenge. With sharing, discussing and developing new connections we can try to make this life transition a positive rather than a painful experience. Contact Eva at elzimmerman6@hotmail.com if you would like to join such a group. Dates for meetings will be set after the group is formed.

Snowbirds/Flakes

Contact Susan at malsue531@aol.com

Hampton's Social Group
Are you out in the Hamptons for the summer?  If so, are you looking for more social interaction?  It would be nice to start an informal peer group with a somewhat different format where TTN members could socialize, participate in different kinds of activities. For those with spouses/partners, they would be invited to join us in some of these activities. How it develops would depend on the group's interests.  If this sounds interesting to any TTN members who may have houses in the Hamptons including our Long Island and Westchester chapters, email Arline Newman at ArlineNew@aol.com

Poker Group:

Beginners, (who know the basics of poker,) and intermediate players are welcome. The group goal is to make each of us a better poker player by analyzing hands after they are played, and to have fun while doing it. We play a variety of games (dealer's choice.) We have learned that playing for some money makes each person more invested in doing the correct thing in each hand so we have agreed to play for small stakes (nickels, dimes and quarters). Salon (Last Tuesday of the Mo.)
Is devoted to giving its members a chance to discuss a topic of significance and interest, with discipline and passion, for two hours every month. Why? Members long for an opportunity to converse with interested others, with different points of view. They know, too, that significant change always begins with conversation. The Salon offers an opportunity to awaken to a topic, to see how one's personal experiences relate to it, to begin seeing it in many places and to experience a building of greater understanding. (After a Salon it is not uncommon to discuss a topic many times with members of The Salon and/or new people.) Two weeks prior to the meeting, topic-related questions are sent out.

Second Act (4th Thurs/mo)
Originally a group of twelve whose lives would probably never otherwise cross, these women were determined and enthusiastic about keeping the group not only just going along but making it a very special place to share experiences, passions, goals, and in other words from whence we came to where we want to go. Just like the Play of Life the First Act in any suspenseful drama, a great deal occurs but so do many questions that need to be understood and answered. When you settle down for the Second Act you find that everything seems to start to fit into its proper place and all the questions & doubts start to be resolved. You finally realize that you are enjoying this Play more than you ever thought you would. This is our quest!

Special Interest Peer Groups

A Classical Music Peer Group
A group of TTN members who attend concerts and/or opera performances at moderate cost once a month. There is a wealth of generally less-expensive venues in New York in addition to the more obvious Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Opera. These include the 92nd Street Y, the City Opera, Symphony Space, Metropolitan Museum, Bargemusic, Le Poisson Rouge, Miller Theater at Columbia, Washington Irving High School. In the summer, there is the Concerts in the Parks series and opera in the parks which are a wonderful opportunity to enjoy free music with a picnic. Also, we can get-together in a member's apartment from time to time to watch a DVD or listen to a CD. We might also invite a musician to come and talk to us about an upcoming performance or about the state of classical music in New York City. In sum, there is a real wealth of possibilities for those of us interested in classical music to get together.

One of our members, a certified life coach, is helping to guide us in our search. We typically follow a discussion format in which specific questions are assigned for each meeting as a starting point for our exploration. We've struck a nice balance between more serious and general discussions and are benefiting from the many and varied experiences of our group members. We meet the second Monday of each month, from 6-8 PM in the evening. Contact: Judy Capel
