TTN of Long Island - "Our History (Herstory!!!)
section header bar
In the Spring of 2003, Dania Smith began working with TTN New York City to identify and contact women on Long Island who had joined the organization or expressed an interest in it.  On October 9, 2003, there was a list of 15 women who would come to an evening meeting.  That core group evolved and developed over the next eighteen months, with some leaving and others joining.  By the end of 2005 it was a committed and cohesive peer group of women examining and evaluating our individual transition issues.  Part of the growth together included doing 'fun things' in addition to annual meetings.

In January 2006, the Long Island Peer Group was featured in a full spread article in Newsday, as we visited the MOMA.  The response to the article was amazing.  Over fifty women on Long Island called or emailed TTN wanting to join!  And that began the growth the resulted in our becoming a Chapter by 2007.

In March 2006 we had our first open meeting, attended by over 40 women.  The energy and excitement were palpable and three new Peer Groups were started that evening.  In October 2006 another meeting resulted in another group being formed.  By the beginning of 2007, we had five peer groups meeting on Long Island, and we had become a new Chapter.

Volunteers were solicited to join a Steering Committee.  The newly formed Steering Committee began meeting monthly to plan events for the Chapter.

That very first Peer Group, aptly named "The Originals" is still together and there are now a total of 26 Peer Groups on Long Island.  Some are general interest groups, with newer members focusing on issues of retirement and the ensuing transitions that are faced.  Others have evolved into Special Interest Groups; such as Health and Wellness, Day Trippers, Travel, Book Groups, Lunch Bunch, etc.

TTN Long Island offers a unique array of events and activities tailored to the needs and interests of our members.

Peer Groups, which are the backbone of TTN, offer the opportunity to engage with other women through discussions, sharing, social events, and workshops.

Our events and general meetings bring speakers, authors and experts to talk with us about interesting subjects, such as:  creative thinking, volunteering, navigating the world of medical insurance, finance, health issues, transitions, friendship, financial consulting, etc.
