Message from Ellen Bartoldos, TTN/LI Chair

Dear TTN Members and Friends,

As 2009 draws to a close, the Long Island Chapter has much to celebrate.  It's been a great year!

We have seen new peer groups form and others take on new interests and activities.  Our Peer Advisory Council got started in June, opening communication between peer groups, sharing ideas and helping to shape and guide the chapter.  Our three committees - Volunteerism, Membership and Programming - have added new members and new energy to TTN-LI.

We had over 100 people join us on a cold January night for our first Volunteer Fair to learn about opportunities to make a difference.  We got involved - helping young women choose their prom dresses, assisting at the Long Island Fair and helping to clean up Jones Beach.  Our members continue to be involved with the vital work of child abuse prevention and education, literacy ad fighting hunger.  We are making a difference across Long Island!

We continued to learn and grow, listening as LI women authors shared their writing and were an integral part of Hofstra's 2009 Conference on Women in Career Transition.  We learned how to be better mothers-in-law and, once again, greeted Suzanne Braun Levine as she shared her wisdom about growing older.  In October we improved our financial acumen with two great programs by Paula Filler of the National Financial Network.  Finally, our own Judy Rosemarin, life coach and story teller par excellence, used her talent and humor to help us cope with the stresses and strains of life in the 21st century.  She was fabulous!

One of our most exciting events this year was "It's My Party" - created by the B3 peer group.  We danced, reminisced and had so much fun that people are still talking about it!  From our post-holiday cocktail party to our spring luncheon and fun-filled picnic at Ellen's, we grew closer to one another, building that community which is a hallmark of TTN.

On a national level, TTN has added new chapters in Philadelphia, Central Ohio and Connecticut.  The Board has launched a Strategic Planning Team, comprised of board members and representatives from five of our largest chapters.  This effort will help to move TTN to its next level of growth as we continue to reach out to women across the country.

But our most important strength continues to be TTN's ability to bring together an interesting and active community of women, celebrating our strengths, sharing our challenges and charting the course to "whatever comes next".  On behalf of the Long Island Steering Committee, I wish you the special gifts and joy of this holiday season and hope for a happy and healthy 2010.

Peace,
Ellen

Summary of TTN/LI Volunteer Activities - 2009
Sari Goren - Volunteer Activities Coordinator

January - Volunteer Showcase
On a freezing Wednesday night in mid January over 100 woman (and a few men) braved  the cold to hear a panel representing Long Island  non profit agencies describe available volunteer opportunities.  The seven agencies attending included:  CAPS, Education & Assist Corp., LI Volunteer Center, Literacy Volunteers of Nassau County, Old Westbury Gardens, Red Cross and SeniorNet of Suffolk County.  This panel was unique because it matched the agencies with TTN members who volunteer at the non profit.  Each TTN  member had a chance to describe her unique volunteer experience.

A "Q & Q" followed the panel presentation.  Those who attended also had the opportunity to visit with each non profit to learn more about the agency and available opportunities.

May - The Prom Boutique
The Prom Boutique was a very special two day event sponsored by the Long Island Volunteer Center.  It was held at the Family and Children's Association Hagedorn Family Resource Center in Hempstead.

Everything needed to make the prom a success for a teenage girl was donated, including 1800 new and gently used gowns, shoes, accessories, pocketbooks and jewelry.  The girls came from Nassau and Suffolk Counties, Brooklyn and Queens.  High School guidance counselors, social workers, and at risk youth program coordinataors referred them.

Seventeen TTN/LI women volunteered to work at this event.  They acted as sorters, runners, and some worked the dressing room, helping the girls decide which gowns worked best for them.  The event was a great success with over 450 girls attending.  The group consensus was that all their had work had been well worth the effort.

October - Long Island Fair at Old Bethpage Village
At 9:15 AM in early October, ten hardy TTN/LI women gathered at the Old Bethpage Village dressed in layers, holding water bottles and wearing fanny packs, ready for any contingency.  This was the first day of the fair and hundreds, if not thousands, of school children were expected to attend along with regular fair goers.

Most had attended an orientation on the preceding Thursday evening, but even so they were not sure what to expect.  On the day of the fair the women were divided into two groups,  one to supervise a game of skill,a nd the other to supervise the potato sack races.  The assignments were for the entire day.

Children from across Long Island and Queens participated.  The women played a variety of roles at their designated sites - activity supervisors, ticket collectors,, cheer leaders, race starters, line checkers and the like.

When the school buses left at 2 PM, the women were exhausted, but sure in the knowledge that they had helped make the day a success.

September begins our new Recruit a Member incentive:  If you introduce a friend to TTN and she becomes a member, you will receive a free month added to your membership.  If you bring two new members on board, you will receive two months free, and so on (up to 12 full months free).  So, take a fresh look at your email and cell phone address books, think of neighbors, friends and business colleagues around the country, and share TTN and our wonderful community with someone new!

How will it work?  The new member, upon signing up, will be asked how she learned about TTN.  She'll provide your name , and you'll get the extra month - it's that simple!  (Be sure to remind her to fill in your name so you get your extra month of membership).

The program runs from September 1st through year's end, so spread the word now, ahead of all of our exciting and diverse fall programming activities.

And to help spread the word:  Here is some text below that you can copy, paste and revise as you see fit to send along to your contacts via email.

You probably remember my mentioning The Transition Network - an organization that's introduced me to some great women and activities that I really value.  It's the only nonprofit focused on women over 50 who are thinking about "what's next" - so it brings together women who are working and retired, with different professional backgrounds.  The common thread is that they're energetic and positive about being a woman over 50.
I know you'd enjoy getting involved with your local chapter in Long Island.  They offer interesting programs and small group discussions that are an excellent way to expand your circle f friends.
Our Website (www.thetransitionnetwork.org) has lots of information about who we are and what we do.  Membership information is available at https://www.thetransitionnetwork.org/Join.aspx.  I get a free month's membership if you join and list me as the person who introduced you...so there are two reasons for you to get involved:  you become part of an inspiring community of women, and I get an extra month of membership.  Ok, I owe you lunch the next time I see you...
